What is the All-on-4 Dental Implant?

Sick and tired of ill-fitting, uncomfortable and unattractive dentures that you are forced to wear every single day? Are you seeking a long-term solution that isn’t cost-restrictive? Luckily, because of the predictability of dental implant effectiveness, dental experts have now developed a graft-less, 4-implant solution just for you!

Dental professionals call it the All-on-4 dental implant technique. This latest advancement in the world of implants dentistry enables patients to have fixed teeth restorations within the same day. The requirement for long healing periods and bone grafting surgery is eliminated with the All-on-4 technique. If you are in the UK and trying to find a dentist who provides this treatment then head over to

All-On-Four, which is a technique intended for complete rehabilitation of the edentulous (toothless), pertains to a surgical and prosthetic medical treatment designed during the 90s by Portuguese dentist Paulo Malo.

The procedure involves the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla and the mandible using a fixed prosthesis via positioning 4 implants in the front maxilla where the bone density is much stronger. This maximizes the success rate of the procedure. The 4 implants complement a fixed prosthesis with up to 14 teeth, which is positioned quickly on the day of the treatment procedure.

All-On-Four Dental Implant Considerations

Before a dentist recommends this type of surgery, the following must be taken into consideration:

  • It would be ideal if the patient is free of any parafunctional habits such as bruxism and TemporoMandibular Joint (TMJ) problems
  • The bone must be at least 5mm or less in width and 10mm in height, measured from canine to canine
  • The minimum bone width found in the mental foramen (mandible) should be no less than 5mm and bone height should be no less than 8mm. This is where the sensory nerves are located so requirements have to be exact to minimise the chance of nerve damage.

If the patient has followed every requirement then the dentist can signal a go ahead for the implant surgery.

Benefits of the All-On-Four Dental Implant

In an effort to enhance the success of aesthetic implant procedures; the All-On-Four dental implant procedure was specifically developed to offer various benefits geared towards management of the edentulous patient. Benefits of this dental procedure over other dental protocols include the following:

  • A quick and easy procedure
  • Capacity to prevent painful bone grafting interventions
  • Potential for instant loading during surgical appointment
  • Lowered patient expenses because of the need for fewer appointments.
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Can be used for partially or fully edentulous patients
  • Can be performed as a flap-less procedure

As with any dental implant procedure the All-On-Four relies upon custom implant standards and thorough treatment planning on the part of the dentist performing the procedure.

The method uses the patient’s present dentures allowing basic chair side configurations, relining and repositioning in the patient during the same day as the procedure. This said, the All-On-Four dental implant procedure could be considered as the viable solution for dentists who desire to harness the benefits of fixed implant prosthodontics to patients.
